Major and Minor GPA Calculators

The spreadsheets in this section can be used to calculate program GPAs and content area GPAs for any teaching major or minor offered at MSU. Be sure to select the calculator that matches your catalog year (shown in the major/minor heading in DegreeWorks). Then enter the number of credits and letter grade for each course (or approved substitute course) you've completed.

To complete the calculator correctly:

  • Omit the "T" from any transfer grades. 
  • Do not enter credits or grades for any courses in progress, courses not yet completed, or courses graded "P."
  • Watch out for the autofill feature, which can incorrectly add "+" or "-" to letter grades.

Montana Assessment of Content Knowledge (2023-24 and Subsequent Catalog Years)

MSU’s Teacher Education Program Requirements underwent a significant revision in the 2023-24 catalog that remains in effect for the 2024-25 and subsequent catalogs: “Successful Program Completion” now requires students to earn a passing score on the Montana Assessment of Content Knowledge (MACK). The GPA Calculator spreadsheets for majors in the affected catalog years therefore also include a tool for calculating a MACK score.

The MACK comprises a student's major GPA as well as their content knowledge as demonstrated during student teaching and their score on the Praxis Subject Assessment. These components are completed at different times during a student's degree:

  • Students must earn a 3.0 major GPA to be eligible for admission to the Teacher Education Program prior to enrolling in any methods or practicum coursework.
  • Students must earn a passing score on the Praxis exam (sufficient for 2 points on the MACK; minimum scores vary by major and are listed in the appropriate calculator) prior to beginning their student teaching placement.
  • Students must demonstrate proficient content knowledge during their student teaching semester.

All-Purpose GPA Calculator

Use this spreadsheet to calculate any GPA: major, minor, option, or overall. Just enter the number of credits earned at each grade. TEP applicants only need to use this calculator to calculate GPAs for the Special Education concentration or for the Elementary Education concentrations in Math, Science, or Early Childhood Education.
