The department of psychology and earth sciences is now located in Traphagen Hall. The department of earth sciences includes geology, geohydrology, geography, paleontology, and snow sciences. There is also a Map Library in the basement.

Traphagen Hall was named in honor of Frank Traphagen, MSU’s first chemistry and natural sciences teacher. He also was manager of the 1899 football team. It was built in 1919 to replace the old chemistry building that had burned down three years earlier. Today no chemistry labs or classes are held in Traphagen, but the carving above the door still stands as a reminder of its history in chemistry.
